Buying in bulk

I know that there are a lot of smart, knowledgeable family members and friends who read our blog so I am going to take advantage of that today. About a week ago I got a knock on our front door and it was a woman who was driving around my neighborhood trying to gather clients to sell bulk meat too. She took me to her truck and showed me all of the different types of meats- chicken, beef, pork, and fish. It is frozen and whenever you run out, you call her up and she delivers more to your door. She compared the price she sells the meat at against the stores prices and it is definitely cheaper to buy it from her. I don't question her honesty and I know she is not trying to rip me off. Her meat is USDA choice inspected, vacuum packed, blah, blah. What I would like to know is how you buy $200-300 worth of meat at one time? I know in the long run it saves money and it would last a really long time. What I don't know is how you save up to buy in bulk like that. Talking with the meat lady got me thinking about joining Sam's Club or Costco because I know you can buy everything in bulk there. I would love to know from those of you who have memberships to these kinds of stores, if it is worth the membership fee? Do you really save any money? Dave and I used to be an add-on to my mom's Sam's Club membership and it didn't cost us anything, so we felt like we saved a little bit of money. We didn't really have a need for the membership back then because it was just the two of us. I would greatly appreciate any insight you might have on these questions. Thanks!

Ok, I'll talk.

For us (me plus two roomies), buying in bulk only works for necessities like trail mix and toilet paper. One time, my roommate bought a bunch of meat in bulk... man, that was a mistake.. whew...

That's all I got

Okay, now that I'm not first. We used to have a Costco membership because it's not too expensive ($45 for a year). I can't remember what we used to get there (other than beer) and we've since let the membership run out. I remember Katherine would end up making 2 grocery trips, one to the regular store and one to Costco, it always seemed like quite an ordeal. Oh, we also used to get soda and granola bars there. Anyway, maybe you could go to the local store and look at all the things they have and write down the prices of what you would buy. Then compare them to the regular store. That way you'll be able to see whether it's worth it to have to make a second grocery trip with a two year old and a baby. I did always enjoy going to Costco because they have books and clothes for sale there. I would sometimes find clothes that fit me (though Katherine never could). In fact I'm wearing a Costco shirt and jeans right now!!! I also really like the Costco concession stand where you can get a hotdog and a soda for $1.09. That's a pretty good deal... though I wouldn't buy hotdogs in bulk. Bottom line: Stephen is the best.

Thanks Kevin.
We went ahead and got a Sam's Club membership because it was only $40 and there are two that are close by. Diapers, wipes, and formula are a good deal and the free samples are even better. My mom told me that gas and prescriptions are cheaper there as well. I guess time will tell!
